About #88 Chevrolet Driver, Kelly Bires

The ultracompetitive, high profile #88 Chevrolet is being driven by 25 year old Kelly Bires, a rising star in the racing world. Kelly Bires was signed by JR Motorsports in September 2009, and completed his first race under the JRM banner in the final race of the series at Homestead-Miami Speedway in the #5 Chevrolet. Bires was not plucked from obscurity by team owner Dale Earnhardt Jr. Before joining the JR Motorsports family, Bires had extensive racing experience and strong credentials having competed for two years in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and NASCAR Nationwide Series where he scored three to five and eleven top-ten finishes.

By the time he was old enough for a driver’s license, Bires had already been in the racing world for years. By age 12, Bires had two Regional Karting Titles. By age 14, he had earned consecutive national championships. When Bires was 15 years old he entered the Allison Legacy Car Series and won Rookie of the Year in 2000 and Series Champion in 2001, two of the most prestigious awards. In 2002, Bires moved to the late model ranks and ran locally in his home state of Wisconsin before moving to Charlotte to pursue a NASCAR career.

Bires quickly made his mark when he entered the ASA Late Model Series in 2006. He racked up seven wins, four poles, 15 top-five finishes, and, in 17 starts, he never finished outside the top-ten. With his record, Bires was the hands down winner of the series championship and the Rookie of the Year title.

JTG Racing could not help but notice Bires’ impressive racing resume and signed him to drive one of its two NASCAR Camping World Truck Series entries in 2007. Bires benefitted from the mentorship of racing veteran, Mark Martin, who he teamed with early in the season. When a mid-season opportunity to race in the Nationwide Series arose, Bires jumped on it. Bires debuted at the Meijer 300 race at Kentucky Speedway driving the #47 Clorox car for JTG Daugherty Racing where, after starting 26th, he finished seventh. Bires posted two top-ten finishes during his rookie season.

Bires kept running for JTG in 2008, racking up one top-five and six top-ten finishes. In 2009, Bires drove in select races for Kevin Harvick, Inc., Braun Racing and CJM Racing. In four starts, Bires earned two top-five and three top-ten finishes. In 2009, Bires also made one ARCA start at Talladega where he led for 35 laps and ultimately finished ninth.
